Though obviously based on the books by Colin Dann, the story itself is heavily based on Richard Adam's "Watership Down" novel. It has obvious similarities such as the pike in the river, a clumsy water bird, and their homeland being destroyed by human building, and more. Being they're both set in the north too, there are bound to be influences anyway.

Animals of Farthing Wood is simply a classic though, and I find it more enjoyable than Watership Down. It teaches children that not everything is rainbows and butterflies all the time, and animals will suffer because of the thoughtless activities of humans (though not all humans are depilated as bad, such as the Warden and the Fire-fighters).

The death of the Hedgehogs on the motorway is upsetting yet educational for young children, and Badger in his set slowly dying of old age explores a death less human-related. Don't be put off by this though, as it also has many humorous scenes which outweigh the tragic ones!

The animals each have a distinct personality and accent from all over England which suit them perfectly. Weasel's cockney is quite hilarious. The American version of this classic has missed the point entirely.

The only thing I suggest is that you don't buy these 'feature length' videos unless you are ok with the scenes being highly cut. These include the death of Baby Rabbit in a pheasant shoot, Fox's cunning with the farm dog Bruno when it gives chase, the fat cat at the swimming pool - the pool being a life saver for the Newts, Fox meeting Vixen when he gets separated, the Tom cat, Adder saving the Fieldmice/Voles/Shrews from a Mower and blimey many more which show character and story development.

So, the 'single episode' videos, though harder to get hold of, are uncut and are a much better viewing. I hope someday the whole UNCUT animation will be available on DVD for the many fans what wish to have it, yet are being denied for some reason.

I love thsi series.I watched it when it was first aired on the television and watched it about 7 or 8 years later, its fantastic. This is the first video in the series and you will want 2 watch all 9 after this 1.The characters are loveable and not at all annoying or babyish(like the dreaded Percy The Park Keeper)tye animation is strange as the animators use the same animated frames more than once but it is better in the second series but that does not spoil it at all.The second series is the best of all three ,the third series is rather lame and dissapointing but it ends on a touching note.
I would love to see this on DVD or re aired so other small ones can watch it but big ones can like it 2.It holds a special place for me.
I would give the entire series 10\10
Fantastic viewing for everyone.

This has to be the best thing since time began! The animals of farthig wood played a huge part in my childhood and owning it on video is great, but DVD would be so much better... Never the less I rate this 5*, A certain tearjerker and great entertainment all on one video, had me laughing and crying all the way through.
