Amazon.co.uk Review It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Lost for words September 8, 2010 BatmanBoyNJ (Hertfordshire, UK) This is the greatest thing I've seen of Michael Jackson. The performance (even though it's rehearsals) is outstanding! The songs, the dancing, the dancers, the live instruments...it would have been a spectacular show! But still, this DVD is a great way to remember Michael. He's a true legend.
what a show it would have been.... August 6, 2010 Sykesy (Leeds, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While you can still tell that some of the 'as it happens' footage on this DVD was in itself orchestrated, nonetheless this is a piece of DVD memorabilia you'll want to keep to show your grandkids - one of pop's all time sensations in preparation for what would have been the live shows of the century.
Great to see in action what a gifted natural talent he was, despite what he'd done to his face over the years.
Buy it and enjoy it every once in while to marvel at the genius that was MJ.
The legend lives on! August 5, 2010 Philippa Leah The last chance to see the king in action. I have always known Michael the best in his concerts. I could see how much he loved the stage and how much he enjoyed entertaining the audience. Despite all the hard times he went through to create a masterpiece, he enjoyed it, because he was creating.
Don't miss it. Watch it and certainly watch his other concert on DVD, the Dangerous Tour in Bucharest. He is THE perfectionist!
Is it OK to not like this now? August 5, 2010 JD (Salisbury, Wiltshire United Kingdom) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK. Someone please explain. How has this earned such positive reviews? Have all the negative ones been systematically removed?
Now I like Michael Jackson's music and own the stuff from his heyday, enjoying the odd bit from the subsequent years as well, but this film is at best boring and at worst a further continuation of the disturbing part of his career.
This film does show the guy can still dance and, when he wants to, sing. He still had the talent, unquestionably. So if there is a message from this production it is that they guy was sensationally gifted - the strength of the music is reminder of that enough.
But what the film also proves is that Jackson was never, ever going to be ready to perform this show consistently.
How they managed to salvage enough from the footage when he clearly didn't want to sing and, on many occasions, is clearly unstable, is beyond me.
Also disturbing is the sycophancy on show from his entourage, including the director and the cheering, whooping dancers who are just happy to be riding the Jackson fame machine.
Only the musical director seems to be willing to question what seems to be a lack of commitment to the rehearsals and a need to 'save my voice' that means we rarely hear him sing.
Those are the rare highlights in an otherwise bland film that could have been much better had it revealed anything about the complexity of MJ in those last few months. The want to perform, but the struggle with past demons.
Instead we get an all-too sugar sweet image that just doesn't cut it unless you are in the 'Michael is an angel' school of thought.
For me, the 'a gift to the fans' reference at the front doesn't sit 100% well when you consider how much money this production has generated for the Jackson estate.
The Heal the World with the little child at the end is also pretty disturbing in the circumstances.
Finally, the 'we can all do our little bit to save the world' statements kind of sit strangely when followed by instructions to do the fireworks 'times 100' on what would have been a far from carbon neutral show.
I think I'd need to turn off a fair few energy efficient light bulbs to cover MJ's touching environmental message in the show.
Like I say, I viewed this with an open mind. It's not a slur on one of our greatest entertainers. It's just that this film is not the nicest memory of Michael Jackson, though I'm sure it thinks it is.
For me it leaves a bitter taste and even more of a sadness that one so great and initially so pure of spirit, was lost to the fame machine and advised so badly.
Summary: If you LOVE Michael Jackson, buy this (although I'm sure you'd already have it if so). If you like him but prefer to remember his heyday, don't, or wait until it's on TV.
One last comment - video quality is variable and not brilliant throughout. It isn't a fabulous HD experience and screen aspect changes throughout.
This is it August 3, 2010 Chery (Stockport, England) I bought this for my children 7yo and 13yo! They absolutely love michael jackson! I grew up with his music. It's great to see him from a "candid"point of view and to see him as an actual person! What a wonderful video!
