For those of you who have never seen Northern Exposure, you have missed out on TV Magic, that in my opinion will never be bettered.
For those of you who did watch this excellent programme, you should go out and buy this, and remind yourself why you loved it so much when it was on our TV screens. It's still as good now as it was back then, and in my view, in a way it's better. You remenice about the good old days (when I was young), and the characters are ones you know. It's like being reunited with old friends that you haven't seen for years.

Ah yes, the Northern Lights. In this season there is an episode with the above title. The story of how Bernard Stephens on instinct alone buys himself a motorbike and heads north until his gut tells him to stop. He stops in Cicely, Alaska. What follows is a wonderfuly imagined tale with dreamy music (particularly 'Moon River') and a conclusion which had me chuckling heartily. This is an hour of pure magic!

As a whole, the series is a must have DVD to begin your association with the six seasons of genius which will seldom if ever be equalled.

The contrast between the quintessential urbanite and the laid back, quirky town of Cicely is what makes this series so enjoyable. All the characters are well developed with distinct if unusual personnalities. Having watched Northern Exposure, you start to understand why people would want to downsize! Highly recommended.

Watching this on DVD is like having some old friends pop round who I haven't seen in years. I'd forgotten how good this series is, and it's great to see John Corbett as he was when I first drooled over Chris in the morning and his gorgeous, dreamy voice. (I even downloaded some WAVs such is my obsession.) But they were all great characters and watching series one has been a real treat - I can't recommend this series highly enough, watch and discover what we all loved about it the first time around.

My husband and I used to watch this series in Germany when it was shown on British Forces TV. We really looked forward to this wacky and original show on a Saturday evening. Later on it was transferred to German TV in a dubbed version and was a total flop. Once we lost forces TV Northern Exposure disappeared out of our lives and I never stopped googling the network looking out for its appearance on DVD. At last!!

I agree with another reviewer that the packaging and lack of extras is disappointing, but the picture quality is fine and that's what counts in the end.

The series is about a young New York doctor, who sponsored by the State of Alaska through university, overlooks a clause in his contract stating that he has to practise in Alaska for a certain amount of years. He ends up in Cicely, a total backwater, in a sub-standard office with some decidedly odd patients. The town is peopled by some real eccentrics: Holling who runs The Brick with his very young and ditsy lover Shelly, Maggie the pilot and general handywoman - all of whose previous boyfriends have died on her, Ed a young Indian boy with a passion for the cinema, Maurice ex astronaut and entrepreneur and Chris, local DJ and part-time philosopher. My favourite though has to be the virtually monosyllabic, spiritual Marilyn - Joel the doctor's receptionist.

There's some wonderful dialogue too:

"Dr. X on line one".
"Marilyn we only have ONE line!"

Indian chief in a sauna to Dr. Joel:

"I won this sauna. But it broke. It had a guarantee, but I'd have had to have sent it back to Finland to get it repaired".

It is a thoroughly enjoyable series, well-written and leaves you with a nice glow after you've watched it.
